23 years ago to the date we travelled down to Yeovil Town for the Isthmian League Premier Division title decider at The Huish. We lost 3-0 in front of 3,500 and just about escaped a kicking from the locals. Yeovil are now in League One, we are roughly half a division higher than in 1988, but have been a lot lower in the mean time!

Missed that trip by a couple of years, definitely one of the ones to have entered into Bromley folklore though...

cant believe that was 23 years ago ,memorable day even if the result wasnt good ,3-0 flattered them we had chances at 0-0 and another at 1-0,we were a true team then Ian Young,Graham Brenton,Paul Edwards etc, lots of great memories from the days of Trevor Fords Black and white army .

that was my first proper season following Bromley. My dad had taken me a couple of times a few years earlier when we had Carlton fairweather in the side, but that season I hardly missed a game home or away. Graham Brenton is one of my favourite ever Bromley players, Edwards & Shaw were a superb central pairing. Wasn't Ronnie Murrock up front that year? Maybe Paul McMenemy too, though he might have come a bit later. But my absolute favourite Bromley player, Alan Scotting was there then, similar style to Dunk but much more agressive!! Godders & Gary Hewitt too, & Nicky Sullivan in goal. What a team....
I was sort of glad we didn't win that game though, as I did wonder how we'd cope in the Conference with small crowds & a pretty poor ground.

I thought it may have been Jerry who hit the top of the bar at 0-0, but we didn't really perform and lost to a very physical team, who had just splashed the cash on a striker to ensure they beat us to the title.
Bromley played some really good attacking football that season, but they also knew when to dig-in and fight for a result. My best season as a Bromley fan and still coming to terms with the fact it was 23 years ago.

::)I think it was John Roles who hit the crossbar just before half time.Strangely, I travelled independently- my brother-in-law at the time lived near Taunton and a mate of his, who followed Yeovil, drove me to the match. I don't remember any aggro , but perhaps I was in the wrong place!

Ben makes a valid point when he says his best season as a Bromley fan,it really was a team to be proud of the likes of Scotting,Edwards,Hewitt,Brenton were great for us ,a great team socialy too, such a shame we missed out on the title & lost a Kent semi as this team really deserved to celebrate . The Goldberg promotion season with Kent cup win & trip to Gillingham was great but i was older by then and as we had more train away days then as a group it was more memorable. As for the Yeovil away game we got kicked & spat out & a decent fan of theirs (who i knew from gigz) got dogs abuse just for talkin to me,it was a different world for us ,i also remember a copper telling us not to wear colours outside the ground cos they had some evil b*******.l

A point in time that my memory which is pretty shot remembers well . There were two supporters coaches leaving HL early that morning - for some reason i had it that either Hewitt or Brenton hit the bar. I can still picture the shot now now, as i was right behind the goal watching it come towards us. Their forward Doherty got a hat-trick that day - and his name has been etched on my memory ever since.. A great team back then Murrock, Godders, think the legend that is Curtis Hayes had taken over from Nicky Sullivan by that point and super-sub Paul Loughlin.

I have killed a lot of brain cells since then but i think it was Brenton who hit the bar ,he definitly put one just wide in a one on one with their keeper ,the kind of chance he usually put away.Nice to see a post get some interest and these names like Curtis Hayes (best Brom keeper i have seen),Ronnie Murrock conjure up some great memories. A 5-0 win at a decent St.Albans team ,a 4-2 thriller v Farnborough at the Lane & a home win over Yeovil .Just proves Bromley FC its a Life sentence (LOL).

We've had a number of better individual players since then, but aside from the brief period when we had a good stable team under MG with the likes of Adeneyi, Super Nic, McCleary, Williams, Duku, Osborn, Wood etc, this was the best 'team' we've had in the 25 years I've been coming. I don't keep old programmes, but I think the likely line up that season was something like the one below, though this is very much from memory. I'm sure Curtis Hayes came after that season, when Trevor Ford & his deputy (forgotten the name - ex Charlton player) moved on to I think Margate or Dover??
1 Sullivan 2 Frampton 3 Scotting 4 Young 5 Edwards 6 Shaw 7 Hewitt 8 Brenton 9 Murrock 10 McMenemy 11 Jacobs + John Roles (Scotting normally suspended or injured!), Paul Loughlin (supersub). Can't think of any more - didn't Jerry Dolke play the following year?
It's about time we update the history book for Bromley FC!

Think that may have been Colin Powell or something - was Dick Tydeman / Paul Summersby there , or maybe that was the season before.
Also Tim Collins....

It was a long time ago and my memory from 23 weeks ago isn't the best, but for some reason I also thought we had a full-back on loan from Fisher that day !
I was ruined on the journey down and remember thinking I was on the wrong train when we stopped at Gillingham, so i'm not the best for players and match-action that day.
Could Col please post and fill in the gaps!
We also played Yeovil away in the charity cup that August ,so maybe i'm mixing the games together!

The names I posted up are not necessarily those who played in that game, but the basis of the team from that season. I think I have that programme somewhere still, along with the Bromley v Enfield FA Cup game a few years later, but other than a few newspaper snippets on Simon Keith, I think the rest went to the dump a few years back. The Bromley 100 years book can probably fill in the gaps, but maybe it's time to fill in some more history since then too

went to the charity match - we got stuffed that day as well - 4 nil i think. Also seem to remember a FA Cup replay away at Crawley around that season which we lost, though the terraces in the 2nd half was quite lively. They brought quite a few to our place for the 1st game and i recall thinking, blimey fans of non league teams have replica shirts - took a while to catch on, but i have fond memories of my tight fitting Tiphook plc shirt.
Think the new batch of players, and a quality era with some good away days, started arriving a season or two later when george came from Leyton Wingate - after Trevor Ford headed off to Margate and the team broke apart.
