Bromley 2 Boreham Wood 1 – VCS – 04/09/2015
Bromley reignited their title challenge with a hard fought victory over the league leaders in a pulsating match in front of a superb crowd at Hayes Lane thanks to two second half goals.
The Ravens lining up 4-5-1 started the game well with Bradley Goldberg missing a good early chance, but the visitors settled into the game and went in front on 13minutes. A deep corner found Josh Hill unmarked in the box and he headed home unchallenged past a static defence to put the leaders one up. Bromley rallied after going behind with Danny Waldren going close and they pinned Wood back with a series of set pieces, Rob Swaine heading over from a corner, but the away side held out. On a break out of defence Boreham Wood could have gone further ahead, but Alan Julian saved Ricky Shakes’ header and shortly after Bromley’s keeper parried a dangerous Daryl McMahon free kick to safety. Bromley finished the half stronger with Goldberg missing another good chance, before they had a strong shout for a penalty turned down when Moses Ademola appeared to be pulled back as he broke into the box and soon after Ali Fuseini had a powerful drive tipped over James Russell.
The second half saw Bromley start well again, switching to two up front and pressing. They had another penalty shout for hand ball turned down and Anthony Cook had a shot deflected over. Mark Goldberg’s side suffered a big blow when captain Rob Swaine went off injured and they were pinned back by a resurgent Wood with McMahon and Sam Cox forcing a saves from Julian. Then just after the hour came the turning point when Referee Degnarian awarded Bromley a penalty for what looked no more than a collision between Cook and Sam Cox. Cook stepped up and despatched the spot kick despite Russell getting a hand to it. From there The Ravens looked the stronger side for a spell, Pierre Joseph-Dubois was denied by Russell after good work by Goldberg and Jamie Slabber, before Fuseini had a header saved from a corner. Wood sub Graeme Montgomery forced another save from Julian, before Bromley made the killer blow on 80minutes as Goldberg latched on to a Jack Holland through ball and holding off two defender coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net past Russell. Boreham Wood then threw caution to the wind throwing everything forward, Julian made a double save from Nunn at a corner and Lee Angol drove the ball across the goalmouth, but The Ravens held out to secure a vital three points and keep hopes of a first league title since 1961 alive.
Bromley now travel to Maidenhead United on Monday looking to maintain their regained lead at the top of Conference South.
