Enjoyable pre-season kick around in the sun for my first outing of the season. Difficult to judge against a team 2 leagues below us but it was an encouraging performance. Araba and Williams complimented each other well up front and I thought Dolby and Rhule were incisive on the flanks. Waldren looks very tidy in midfield and Sali battled well as always. Back 4 were not really tested and therefore left me with the most question marks. Toots at right-back has never been a long-term solution and I'm not sure I'd take Dolan over Gillman if I had to choose between the 2.

I also thought it was an enjoyable afternoon. Think the 2 up front worked fairly well together, with someone else winning headers & chasing balls, Williams can be quite effective as a few of his incisive passes showed.
I liked Dolan alongside Harwood. Dolan looks like someone who will lift spirits in the side & add extra leadership. 2nd half seemed to show a decent team spirit amongst the players, whereas 1st seemed a bit less so.
If only Dolby could be a better crosser of the ball, he'd surely be playing at a much higher level. Love his work rate, love his willingness not to give up, just wish he was a bit better with delivering it.
Hard to know where we will end up as pre season isn't always a good yardstick. First week of the season will be a better guide. Goldberg knows this league well enough though.

Whyteleafe 0 Bromley 3 – Friendly – 30/07/11 Bromley recorded a fairly comfortable win at their Ryman League Division One South hosts with an entertaining display just over the border in Surrey. From the kick off the game was played at a quick pace despite the warm weather and both sides looked to get the ball forward. Aaron Rhule fired over and hit the post and Hakeem Araba shot wide before Gareth Williams opened the scoring on 32mins when he latched on to a Salifou Ibrahima ball and slotted the ball home. Danny Waldren hit the bar with a free kick and Williams had another effort saved before the break. The second half saw Bromley continue to dominate the play Araba had a header saved before he opened his account bundling home a Joe Dolan cross on 50mins. Williams was denied again before Araba notched his second from the penalty spot on 62mins after a Lockett cross had been handled in the box. A number of changes spoilt the flow of the game from then on, but it was a good work out for The Ravens and great for the striker’s confidence.
Bromley: Santangelo, Henriques, Harwood, Dolan, Green, Rhule, Waldren, Ibrahima, Dolby, Araba, Williams. Subs: Tuna, Jones, Lockett, Udoji.

I think Dolan & Gilman are similar so its Harwood plus one of them ,Dolan might be a bit fitter than Gilman as he has been with us since start of season so for me he should start .Glad we got a win wonder where Paterson was .

I think a number of people were unavailable yesterday due to the late scheduling of the game.

Though i didn't go yesterday from the comments above it seems that Williams and Araba seem to be developing a good partnership. It was nice for the lads to have a win under there belts given the recent results. As things stand my team so far if all players are fit would be, Santangelo ( if we have him on loan), Udoji,Paterson,Harwood,Dolan,Smith,Harding,Tutu,Dolby,Williams,Araba. Have to say i do like the look of Waldren though, seems very steady in the middle and does a good amount of work.

Based on yesterday's performance, Waldren has to start. Playing Toots at right-back is less than ideal but it's the obvious solution.

Does that mean you wouldn't play Harry in the middle Exiled?

I'm not Exiled (obviously), but my 2pence worth is I think it depends on the opposition as to what we do in the middle. We saw a number of times last season that when a tall strong team turned up, Daly & Harding were overun. Chelmsford game for example was different 2nd half when Sali came on & a few times after that, with 3 in the middle, Harry was able to play the attacking role with support behind. There'll be other games where we don't need the extra support, & 2 flying wingers with 2 in the centre will work nicely.
Tutu is a difficult one for me. If I was MG, the 1st player i would have signed this year is Tutu. However if I picked my best 11 from the current players, he wouldn't be in it. But you know that with injuries & suspensions, he will probably play more games than anyone else because of his ability to play decently anywhere in defence, holding midfield & in any formation (Bromley's version of John O'Shea?!).
I don't think it's easy to decide who stays & goes from pre-season games. Sali is maybe not the most dynamic of players, but I've rarely seen a better tackle than one he put in on Saturday to win the ball without fouling & he does a good job breaking up play. Waldren looked impressive Saturday & against Erith & looks versatile too. I'm not sure about Tuna though, he showed some nice touches, but we know the sort of player who prospers in this league & he will need to have more than that.
I wouldn't be suprised if this is another season where there's a fair turnover of players as I think it's going to take a few 'proper' matches to know whether the likes of Rhule can do a job yet in the 1st team & if Smith is upto the task on a regular basis

I agree with your tactical analysis BT. There were quite a few occasions last season where we needed more height and bite in the middle. Unfortunately when Finn went missing so early on in the season and the loss of Vines imo,we didn't have an outlet for a break to help the midfield. For me smith does give us some pace and width but my only reservation with him is that he is slow to track back and that leave Ugo open to a double attack from the opposition as we saw against Charlton. Tuna for me is not going to do anything at this level but could be proved wrong. Waldren i do like the look of though but don't know anything about him so am only going on what i have seen so far.Would it be out of the question to have Harry playing on the right of midfield with Tutu and Waldren in the middle?

Toots is a better player than Ugo, so I'd have him at right-back and Harry and Waldren in the middle, but that's clearly not getting the best out of Tutu. If we get a specialist right-back in, I'd play him at centre-half with Harwood.

Disagree. Ugo has huge potential. He has pace and can get forward. His problem is experience which left him exposed when he has played as a centre back. But I can't see any way that you would pick Toots ahead of him as right back where the odd ricket is unlikely to be so crucial. And if Harry is fit then Waldren would also be ahead of Toots at right back in my book - much as I love the commitment that Toots always brings.

Ugo is actually a right back but the trouble against Charlton was that he was left exposed by Smith not tracking back.Don't care how good a full back you are if you are not having your midfielder tracking back and doing his job then you are never gonna be able to hold a double team on you.
